Emel
Sometimes you have to take control of yourself, just a little, and with strength. Emel has done this with her fourth album, MRA, a danceable, hard-hitting new birth.
Since her debut in 2012 with Kelmti Horra, Emel has offered intense, revolutionary music.
With MRA, she deconstructs to rebuild, keeping music alive. The result is a powerful, salvific, and feminist album.
Powerful with feverish hip-hop, pop, and reggaeton, exemplified by Massive Will. Salvific
with evocative power and rallying lyrics, like in Souty: “My voice has no limits / my voice has no end.”
Feminist by name, MRA means “woman” in Arabic, created by and with women. Emel wants to create a movement of tireless women, alongside Camélia Jordana, Nayomi, and Alyona Alyona.
MRA is 12 tracks with electro productions and unifying lyrics, inspired by a playlist featuring Aya Nakamura, Rosalia, and Jay-Z.
Emel, Arab, French, and now American, sings of resilience and unity. In Rise: “I will rise again like a Phoenix,” and in Nar: “I am a warrior, a witch, a superheroine.”
Let’s take back our destinies, together, by dancing.
